Là tín đồ Phật giáo từ năm mười bảy tuổi, đạo hữu luật sư Christmas Humphreys (1901-1983) không thuộc bất cứ một giáo phái nào của Phật giáo. Ông tin vào Phật giáo thế giới, và ông nghĩ rằng: “chỉ trong sự phối hợp của tất cả các tông phái người ta mới có thể thấy trọn vẹn sự vĩ đại của tư tưởng Phật giáo” (only in a combination of all schools can the full grandeur of Buddhist thought be found). Để làm cho quan điểm của mình được Phật tử trên thế giới chấp nhận, ông đã trình bày Mười hai nguyên tắc của Phật giáo (Twelve Principles of Buddhism) nổi tiếng của mình vào năm 1945, được dịch ra 14 thứ tiếng và được nhiều tông phái Phật giáo trên thế giới chấp nhận. Mười hai nguyên tắc ấy có điều giống với Mười Bốn Nguyên Tắc của Đại Tá Olcott giới thiệu trong tác phẩm Phật pháp vấn đáp (Buddhist Catechism) của ông, được xuất bản vào cuối thế kỷ thứ 19.
