REQUEST for the CESSATION OF the CREATION OF, WITHDRAWAL FROM PRODUCTION, SALE and the RECALL OF OFFENSIVE AND INSENSITIVE PRODUCTS

I refer to the Conforama Catalog, code number: 128842, please find the photo enclosed in this letter, or you can check it out at this link:
http://www.conforama.fr/ConfoOnline/pages/media/FR/catalogue/ope20/op20.pdf

We, Buddhist followers around the world are shocked and disturb at Conforama’s recent carpet production.  We are absolutely stunned to find that the Buddha’s image has been printed on the feet cleaning carpet.

Displaying the image of the Buddha on the feet cleaning carpet is an appalling and serious insult to all Buddhism believers, not just in France, but also to over 500 hundred million Buddhists around the world.

We understand your products are made creatively; however it should never be permitted to show contempt of any religion.  The lack of respect for our religion, as shown by Conforama, could also lead to a very regretful outcome.

Let's think of other possible outcomes if the Conforama Catalog has used the spiritual founders, other than Buddha, on the feet carpet.  What if they portrayed Jesus Christ or Mohamed?  Considering the blatant lack of respect, we must then question the sensitivity and integrity of every employee at every level, responsible for creating, producing and marketing the carpet.  Conforama’s promotion of Buddha images on their products, not only shows ignorance and a total lack of respect for religion, but is highly offensive.

France is a nation with a long-standing civilized, united and determined record of religious tolerance and harmony.  Such simple ignorance, as displayed by your company, in many cases, could cause massive unrest and protests, with ramifications for your company and for the international reputation of France.

To help restore a mutual understanding and respect for religion, we strongly request Conforama take immediate action, in relation to all products containing religious images, and in this instance, with particular regard to those containing images of Buddha, as follows:

- Cease creation, production and distribution of the catalogs & products.

- Recall all catalogs and products distributed, (including from all retail and wholesale outlets.

- Cease creation of any further products displaying religious images that are insensitive.

We are raising this petition to let Conforama and all other companies know how much business you can lose through religious insensitivity, not only from French-Asian consumers but from all French with a social conscience.

Sincerely,

Ven. Thich Nguyen Tang

Subject: Votre annonce dans le catalogue.

Madame, Monsieur,

Cordialement,

Thanh-Long DANG

Vice Président Association Jeunesse Bouddhiste Quang Duc
