Kính bạch chư tôn Hòa Thượng, Thượng Tọa, Ðại Ðức Tăng Ni,

toàn thể quý đồng hương Phật tử,
Trong
Kinh Di Giáo, có một đoạn đức Phật dạy các tỳ- kheo rằng: "Này các
con, hãy vì lòng từ bi rộng lớn, đi gieo rắc hạnh phúc cho đời. Ðừng đi
trùng nhau trên cùng một ngả đường. Các con hãy truyền đạo mầu nhiệm cho
đời hiểu thế nào là cuộc sống cao cả, trong sạch, hoàn toàn và gương mẫu."
Theo lời dạy ấy, các đệ tử xuất gia của Phật đã nối tiếp nhau thực hiện
một cuộc truyền bá chánh pháp rộng rãi, mang ánh đạo vàng gheo rắc khắp
chốn nơi, từ những chốn đô thị phù hoa cho đến những thôn làng hẻo lánh,
từ tiểu quốc này đến tiểu quốc khác, từ lục địa này sang lục địa kia...
Trải bao thế kỷ, bước chân của các tỳ-kheo đệ tử Phật—những kẻ xuất ly
không nhà—đã in dấu trên khắp toàn cầu, mang lại ánh sáng giác ngộ và
hương vị giải thoát cho mọi chúng sinh. Sự hoằng truyền Chánh pháp, theo
lời khải thị của đức Phật, đã trở thành sứ mệnh cao cả truyền thống của đệ
tử Phật, đặc biệt là đối với các vị đệ tử xuất gia, bậc trưởng tử, được
mệnh danh là "Sứ giả Như Lai"— những người trực tiếp mang thông điệp Từ Bi
và Trí Tuệ của Ðức Phật đem vào cuộc đời.
Dần dà,
trong hoàn cảnh mới, thời đại mới, các sứ giả Như Lai không thể thực hiện
đời sống không nhà cũng như hạnh khất thực, nhưng sứ mệnh hoằng pháp vẫn
được tiếp tục thực hiện, càng lúc càng mở rộng hơn, hữu hiệu hơn, qua các
phương tiện của khoa học kỹ thuật hiện đại, và qua các trụ xứ tiêu biểu
của đời sống Tăng-già là tu viện, chùa chiền, tịnh xá, tịnh thất... Có
nghĩa rằng, thay vì sứ giả Như Lai sẽ chia nhau vừa đi khất thực vừa
truyền pháp, thì ngày nay, xây dựng các cơ sở Phật giáo ở khắp nơi, gần
gũi với mọi thành phần nơi từng địa phương, từng đất nước. Phương thức
sinh hoạt và truyền bá có đổi khác, nhưng hạnh nguyện lợi sanh, từ ngàn
xưa đến nay, vẫn chỉ là một.
Từ cái
nhìn đó, chúng tôi thật vô cùng hoan hỷ nhìn thấy các Tu viện, Tự viện
Phật giáo được thành lập ở khắp nơi trên thế giới. Mỗi cơ sở Phật giáo
được xây dựng ở một địa phương nào đó, không thể hiểu đơn giản như là nơi
sinh sống của người xuất gia, mà phải hiểu rằng, đó là biểu tượng của Phật
Pháp, là mạch nguồn trưởng dưởng đời sống tâm linh, là hình ảnh tiêu biểu
của nền văn hóa đặc thoát, siêu việt, là chứng minh hùng hồn cho sự trường
tồn vững mạnh của Chánh pháp.

thưa liệt quý vị,
Hôm nay,
Lễ Khánh Thành Tu Viện Quảng Ðức tại Melbourne, Úc Ðại Lợi, chúng tôi lại
được một lần nữa hoan hỷ chiêm quan sự thành tựu của một cơ sở Phật giáo
Việt-nam nơi xứ người. Với chí nguyện kiên cường, làm việc cần mẫn, Thượng
Tọa Thích Tâm Phương đã từ vị trí của một người tị nạn lưu vong, kết hợp
cùng chư tăng và vận động nhiều Phật tử khác để xây dựng nên cả một Tu
viện Phật giáo nguy nga như thế này. Sự có mặt của Tu Viện Quảng Ðức ở nơi
đây, không chỉ là sự định hình của Phật giáo tại địa phương, mà còn là sự
góp mặt của cả một truyền thống văn hóa Việt-nam nơi xứ người. Nơi đây,
ngoài việc tu tập và sinh hoạt hàng ngày theo truyền thống của tăng sĩ,
các Thầy còn tổ chức nhiều chương trình hướng dẫn, giảng dạy Phật Pháp và
phương thức tu tập cho Phật-tử Việt-nam lẫn ngoại quốc; mở lớp dạy Việt
ngữ cho con em lớn lên ở vùng đất hứa; thực hiện một trang lưới điện toán
song ngữ với lượng bài vở vô cùng phong phú và đa dạng để phổ truyền Phật
Pháp khắp nơi. Những công trình hoằng pháp này, đã được chư Tăng tại Tu
Viện Quảng Ðức thực hiện từ nhiều năm qua. Cho nên, tuy nói là Khánh Thành
Tu Viện Quảng Ðức hôm nay, mà kỳ thực là các Phật-sự đã được tựu thành
từng ngày, từng giờ, qua hạnh nguyện và sự nỗ lực phi thường của chư tăng
nơi trụ xứ này từ lâu rồi.
Dầu sao,
trên phạm trù tục đế, một thời điểm để kỷ niệm, đánh dấu sự khởi đầu cho
một giai đoạn, một sự thành tựu trong bước phôi thai, làm đà tiến cho
những bước kế tiếp là một việc làm cần thiết và hữu ích. Ðó là lý do và là
ý nghĩa của Lễ Khánh Thành Tu Viện Quảng Ðức hôm nay. Xin hết lòng tán
dương công đức hoằng pháp của Thượng Tọa Thích Tâm Phương cùng chư Tăng và
Phật-tử tại địa phương này.
Nguyện cầu hồng ân Tam Bảo gia hộ cho mọi Phật
sự của Tu viện được tựu thành viên mãn. Xin chân thành tri ân các
cấp chính quyền Úc Ðại lợi, chính nhờ sự giúp đở vô giá của quý vị mà
người Việt nói chung, Phật tử Việt Nam nói riêng đã có được một cuộc sống
ổn định, an lạc trên đất nước tự do, lý tưởng và tràn đầy hy vọng này.

Most Venerable Monks, Nuns and Lay Buddhists,
Distinguished Guests, Ladies & Gentlemen,
In the Last Word Sutra,
the Lord Buddha has said : “ Go forth, O! Bhikkhus, for the welfare of
the many, for the happiness of the many, for the good, well-being and
happiness of gods and men. You should avoid walking the same. Preach the
sublime Dhamma, excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle,
excellent in the end. Proclaim the Holy Life, altogether perfect and pure"
Following these teachings, all disciples
of the Buddha has been connected going back through time to perform the
act of transferring to each generation the Dharma (Buddha’s teachings).
They have brought the holy light of Buddhist doctrine sowing its seed
from one place to other, from the sophisticated cities to isolated
villages, from this country to that, from one continent to another.
Transferring the Dharma, following the advise of Buddha, has become a
great mission and tradition of Buddha’s disciples, particularly the Monks
and Nuns, who are called the “ Messengers of Tathagatha/Buddha” – those
directly providing the message of compassion and wisdom of the Buddha to
all life.
Over the centuries, the footsteps of
Buddha disciples the, Bikkhus – Monks and Nuns – who left their homes
traveling far to live the homeless life, spreading the Dharma – have been
imprinted along the travel and trade routes across the globe, carrying the
enlightenment, the light and liberation perfume for all sentient beings,
everywhere as has been possible to reach.
Over time, things have changed and coming
into this modern age, the messengers of Tathagatha can’t perform the
homeless vows and live completely through begging alms any more. Today,
Monks and Nuns are required to live in monasteries and temples and not
literally walk the roads as they once did. However, the Dharma propagating
mission as it oonce was, still continues to be delivered. Today preaching
is conveyed more effectively, through modern technological means, printed
texts, tapes, video, but still through the temples, monasteries of the
Buddhist Sangha.
The messengers still have to seek alms
through donations, gifts and other means and teach the Dharma at the same
time. These days they do this nowadays through building Buddhist
temples everywhere, such as in local neighborhoods, in isolated regions,
among the poor and among the rich, in modern states diverse cultures and
nations around the earth.
It should be noted however as I have
mentioned, though the activities and ways in which Dharma propagation
has been changed as have the times, the vows towards serving all sentient
beings, have remained as they always have from the ancient times of the
Buddha, right up to now, as was the original message from the Buddha,
consistently since his day.
From
that point of view, I have great pleasure to see the Buddhist monasteries,
temples have established everywhere in the world and that every Buddhist
site can be found in some locality. However we must not simply see such
places as a house of Monks and Nuns, but we must comprehend these sites as
a symbol of the artery carrying the life-blood towards all cultivating
the spiritual life. Temples and Monasteries and other religious sites,
symbolize characteristics of an enlightened culture, they represent the
supreme heights to which we can attain, and demonstrate forever the
everlasting stability of Buddha-Dharma.
Ladies
and Gentlemen,
Today,
at this the Open Day of the Quang Duc Buddhist Monastery in Melbourne,
Australia, once again, I have the great pleasure to see the success of a
Vietnamese Buddhist organization operating internationally beyond its
original home providing service to all.
With his
stable vows and his steadfast right efforts, the Very Venerable Thich Tam
Phuong, who came from a position of that of a refugee, has worked together
with the Monks, Nuns and Buddhist followers of Melbourne and elsewhere to
build this magnificent monastery and tribute top the Dharma. The Quang
Duc Monastery has arrived through this magnificent combined effort of
all concerned, has manifested into this wonderful place today, not only
an established local Buddhist organization , but also as a major
contributor to significantly promoting and maintaining Vietnamese culture
internationally.
Here,
beside the daily practice of Buddhism, Monks and Nuns also have organized
Buddhist activities and programs to teach Buddhist doctrine, and practice
for Vietnamese and all other cultural groups of people making up the
Australian community who also seek enlightenment and relief from
suffering.
Quang Duc
Monastery staff followers and supporters have also opened the Vietnamese
language school for children who will grow up in this great English
speaking land of opportunity, being taught to maintain their Vietnamese
language and culture. The Quang Duc Buddhist bilingual website
www.quangduc.com is well
established as a major resource providing the Dharma throughout the world
an electronic Buddhist library rich with information and Buddhist
documents of the two traditions, that of Theravada and Mahayana vehicles.
These
wonderful propagating activities have been performed by all concerned
within the Quang Duc Monastery and therefore, today, we say “ Welcome
to the Inaugural Quang Duc Monastery Day ”, but keeping in mind that
it is really all Buddhist activities throughout time and space that have
contributed to the success of this day. Every day, throughout time through
the Bodhisattva vows and the extraordinary efforts of Monks and Nuns from
long time ago to present in this Monastery and elsewhere this effort has
borne rich and valuable fruit . In the secular point of view, the time
of this anniversary, marks a particular point in time, the completion the
first step, which motivates action towards the next steps ongoing towards
necessary and useful action and attainments. That is the reason the aim
and significance of this Opening ceremony of Quang Duc Monastery today.
I would
like to make a good comment towards the Very Venerable Thich Tam Phuong
and all the Monks, Nuns, local Buddhists and supporters. I pray the Lord
Buddha blesses you all and your Buddhist activities at Quang Duc towards
ongoing success throughout your lives . I also thank all Australian
people and all levels of the Australian Governments state and federal,
for their invaluable support towards the Vietnamese community in
general and our Vietnamese Buddhist followers who have enjoyed a good
life, happiness and stability, enjoying the democratic ideals full of
hope and freedom with in this wonderful nation.
